League for AI producers

bobchops RocBattle Verified Honest Voter: consistent, fair votes across the arena Producer 2 days ago · 19 views
Why not have a league just for people who use AI to make beats?

That way they wont be compelled as much to jump into the regular league, and also they wont be lost to the site.

    That's actually a good idea, I think.

Are you talking full generated ai or ai stems used for production? Because if it's an ai battle then it would be pointless to have a league for ai beats. Anyone could battle at that point because all you would need is a prompt. I'm not against using ai for releases of commercial music. But for battles that defeats the purpose even if it has its own leauge.

@staffmuzik Yeah AI can go over the top with stuff, battling the beat straight from Suno is a waste of everyone's time. But if they use AI elements in their beats, like as a sample etc, then that should be in the AI category in my opinion. I think the criteria should be standard with copyright law. If you can't copyright your beat, you can't battle it. Meaning that there needs to be enough human authorship for you to copyright that beat. The courts said that AI music in itself can't be copywritten because it contains no human authorship. Also, derivative works made from AI material has to contain enough human authorship to be eligible to claim copyright over the material. I'd have to look the law up, but I think that should be the standard for battling AI beats, in an AI category.

    I got it.

Under U.S. copyright law, purely AI-generated beats, instrumentals, or songs cannot be copyrighted because the law requires direct human authorship (Thaler v. Perlmutter). You cannot claim copyright ownership over a track generated entirely or mostly through text prompts in tools like Suno or Udio. [1] (https://www.bmi.com/special/bmi-and-ai), [2] (https://www.reedsmith.com/articles/entertainment-media-guide-to-ai-three-years-on/music-part-2-copyright-nil/)
However, if you combine AI elements with sufficient original human contribution, you can copyright the human-authored portions of the work. [1] (https://songcreator.pro/blog/who-owns-ai-generated-music), [2] (YouTube video)

What Does NOT Count as Enough Authorship

β€’ Writing or tweaking text prompts
β€’ Selecting or generating options from an AI tool
    β€’ Making minor edits, basic mix tweaks, or simple grammar/arrangement adjustments [1] (https://www.reddit.com/r/SunoAI/comments/1oyxzul/how_much_human_editing_is_needed_for_an_ai_lyric/), [2] (https://dynamoi.com/learn/ai-music-distribution/human-authorship-requirement-ai-music), [3] (https://www.bmi.com/special/bmi-and-ai)

What DOES Qualify for Copyright Protection

To register a track containing AI elements, your human-created contribution must meet the standard of original expression: [1] (https://libguides.usc.edu/blogs/USC-AI-Beat/human-authorship-and-creative-control), [2] (https://www.reedsmith.com/articles/entertainment-media-guide-to-ai-three-years-on/music-part-2-copyright-nil/)
β€’ Human-Written Lyrics: Writing original words or performing original vocals yourself over an AI-generated bed.
β€’ Composed Melodies or Instrumentation: Hissing, humming, or playing original instrumental lines or chord progressions that remain perceptible in the final track.
β€’ Substantial Modification / Arrangement: Significantly rewriting, rearranging, or layering AI-generated stems with your own original production elements (such as custom-composed beats, live instruments, or deep structural edits) so that the human contribution forms the core of the work. You can read the full official guidelines on the U.S. Copyright Office AI Policy Guidance. Performing organizations like BMI and AI Guidance also enforce these rules by rejecting registrations for prompt-only tracks. [1] (https://www.copyright.gov/ai/ai_policy_guidance.pdf), [2] (https://www.bmi.com/special/bmi-and-ai)

This is the standard. Let's get that AI category started.
