Edward "Self" Hinson grew up in Southside Jamaica, Queens, and has been making records for more than 30 years. He came up in the late '90s producing for Smif-N-Wessun's Cocoa Brovaz and for Onyx, where he made the title track "Shut 'Em Down" with DMX.
His beats caught the ear of Irv Gotti at Def Jam, and that run put him on some of the biggest records of the era: DMX's "What's My Name?", Ja Rule's "Kill 'Em All" with JAY-Z, "Daddy's Little Baby" with Ronald Isley and "6 Feet Underground," plus Fat Joe's "Opposites Attract" with Remy Ma.
In 2003 he produced Juelz Santana and Cam'ron's "Dipset (Santana's Town)," which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. All told, he counts more than 25 platinum records.
Today Self runs ELPD Productions, executive produces The Wknd Work Show on Shade 45, and directed the feature film "The Third Wish." The New York City Council honored him as an NYC Music Trailblazer. Now he's part of the RocBattle family.
